Level One (Observation)
What was the scariest part for you?
Were there any parts or details that unsettled you?
Level Two (Abstraction)
Any characters you did not like? Why?
Was separation from society the right thing for the characters to do?
Level Three (Personalization)
Did the laws of the community help or hinder? Why? (What we have here is a group of people, who have withdrawn from the wider culture to establish their own ideal society, the boundaries of which are reinforced by fear.)
What is the real monster? (The elders of Covington come to realize that sin is not in the towns, it is in them. Running away from their past or trying to stuff it in a box will not solve anything. Sin thrives in fear and secrecy. Thus, the only way to overcome sin is to bring it out into the open, confess it, and then embrace the freedom that follows.)
What is greater the love of truth (telling the secrets) or the love of community (they would not be in this “utopia” without the lie)?
